Roanoke County receives innovative technology award for new Citizen Connect Permits app

Roanoke, Virginia – The Roanoke County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Team and Development Services Department have been honored with a Commonwealth of Virginia Innovative Technology (COVITS) Award. The recognition was for their development of the Citizen Connect Permits application, a newly launched tool designed to streamline access to permit status information for the public.

The Citizen Connect Permits app simplifies the process of tracking permit applications within the county. Users can easily access details on submitted permits by entering relevant information such as an address, owner name, or Parcel ID. Alternatively, a parcel can be selected directly from a county map, which then reveals the status of all associated permits. The app also allows users to view maps, access imagery, and print reports directly.

The Citizen Connect Permit app is one among a series of innovative GIS-based applications available at Roanoke County’s GIS website, offering enhanced access to various geographic services.

The award was presented during the 2024 COVITS Symposium, which took place on September 11 in Richmond, Virginia. The symposium, attended by prominent speakers like Governor Glenn Youngkin and Lieutenant Governor Winsom Earle-Sears, serves as a meeting point for public-sector professionals and technology industry leaders to share ideas on emerging technologies and approaches.
