Funding awarded to seven trail projects across Virginia to improve recreational access

Richmond, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and the Federal Highway Administration have awarded grants to seven trail projects through the 2024 Recreational Trails Program (RTP). This federal program, which operates on a matching reimbursement basis, is designed to fund the construction and rehabilitation of recreational trails and related facilities across Virginia.

The selected projects span a variety of uses, including motorized, non-motorized, and diverse trail activities, showcasing the wide-ranging recreational opportunities available in the commonwealth. They were chosen from 29 applications submitted by counties, cities, towns, park authorities, tribal and federal governments, state agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

Some of the projects that secured funding include the Creeper Trail Bridge Rehabilitation in the Town of Abingdon, which received $236,630.54, and the Lehigh Portland Park Motorized Trail System in Prince William County, awarded $637,887.58. Other projects, such as the Roanoke River Blueway Memorial Bridge Access Point and Pollocks Branch Trail Bridge in Charlottesville, also gained support with grants totaling over $300,000 each.

“These funds are essential in enhancing outdoor recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike,” said the project coordinators.

Additional RTP funding rounds will be announced, with information available at dcr.virginia.gov/recreational-planning/grants.
