Habitat-Roanoke benefits from Virginia Housing’s major grants marking their 50th anniversary

Roanoke, Virginia – On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, Virginia Housing has formed an alliance with Habitat for Humanity to distribute over $1 million in grants to benefit local communities throughout the Commonwealth.

A sum of $1.2 million from competitive grant funds, earmarked for community rejuvenation, will be allocated across five distinct regions within Virginia. “The Virginia House” granted $325,000 to Habitat-Roanoke, facilitating the construction of a residence in the Belmont-Fallon community in Southeast Roanoke.

Karen Mason, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley, remarked, “We are honored to be one of the five recipients of the Virginia House grant. This investment in the Roanoke Valley underscores our collective endeavor to empower more families to attain financial resilience and stability. The commendable endeavors of Virginia Housing across the commonwealth have our heartfelt gratitude.”

Initiated in 2022, the primary objective of “The Virginia House” grant is to underwrite construction expenses and offer subsidized homeownership loans to families with low to moderate income. Furthermore, part of these funds will be earmarked for a sustainability fund, aimed at mitigating mortgage delinquencies for homeowners facing economic challenges.

A dedication event is scheduled for Saturday, August 26, at 10:00 a.m. to honor a single-family home in Roanoke, constructed for a six-member family with funds from the Virginia House.

Reflecting on their collaboration, Susan Dewey, CEO of Virginia Housing, said, “Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity has consistently been of immense value to us. In light of our 50th Anniversary last year, we deemed it paramount to augment our efforts alongside this esteemed organization to facilitate housing solutions across Virginia. Each initiative we embark upon renews our optimism about the profound influence it can have on the beneficiary families and their communities.”

Habitat-Roanoke serves the cities of Roanoke and Salem, as well as the counties of Botetourt, Craig, and Roanoke. Homeowners collaborate with volunteers to construct their dwellings, ensuring an affordable mortgage scheme. Since its inception in 1986, Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley has successfully completed nearly 300 homes, benefiting over 1,113 individuals.
