Roanoke’s officers rose to the occasion in 2023 National LawFit Challenge

Roanoke, Virginia – The Roanoke Police Department is pleased to share its notable achievements in the 2023 Annual National LawFit Challenge, a revered competition recognized across the United States.

The purpose of the National LawFit Challenge is to rigorously assess an officer’s performance under demanding conditions. By integrating six distinctive, fitness-oriented, and job-relevant tasks, the Challenge aims to gauge and enhance the officers’ cardiorespiratory proficiency, muscular strength, endurance, body composition, and flexibility.

The lineup of events in the challenge is as follows:

  • Bench Press: A singular maximum repetition, evaluated as a fraction of the participant’s body weight.
  • Pull-Ups
  • One-minute sit-up test: An assessment of core strength and endurance.
  • Sit and reach flexibility test: A measure of overall body flexibility.
  • 1.5 Mile run: A task evaluating cardiorespiratory endurance.
  • 200-yard agility course: This multifaceted course imitates real-life obstacles an officer might encounter, which include navigating a 3-foot drainage ditch, scaling a 5-foot wall, climbing stairs, maneuvering through windows, executing a rescue of a downed officer or victim, the capture and handcuffing of a suspect, and a simulated shooting exercise of an alleged offender.

The scoring system is meticulously adjusted to account for the age and gender of each participant, thereby ensuring fair and equal competition among all.

Roanoke’s LawFit team made an impressive showing, securing several prestigious awards:

  • 3rd place in the Overall Individual Female category.
  • 1st place in the Individual Female Sit-and-Reach event.
  • 1st place in the Individual Male Sit-up event.
  • 2nd place in the Individual Female Sit-up event.
  • 3rd place in the Individual Female Suspect Pursuit Course.

This noteworthy performance at the national level by the Roanoke Police Department stands as a testament to their commitment to physical fitness and their readiness to serve their community effectively.
