Virginia cancels its annual tax-free holiday weekend

The Commonwealth of Virginia will not be holding its customary tax-free holiday weekend this year, which often provided a much-appreciated reprieve for parents engaging in back-to-school shopping in August. This development comes according to information released by the Virginia Department of Taxation, specifying that the tax holiday will expire as of July 1.

This decision has raised questions and led to expressions of disappointment among parents in the region. Haley Dean, a Roanoke County parent and homeschooler, shared her concerns and confusion over the discontinuation of the tax break.

She expressed her sentiments saying, “I think that it’s disappointing. I am a homeschool parent, and I spend a lot of money on school supplies and with a child going to college, I’ll be spending even more this year. It’s a great incentive to buy the supplies, so I’m disappointed to hear that.”

With the local sales tax currently hovering around 5%, the absence of the tax-free holiday could imply a notable impact on the expenditure of families preparing for the upcoming academic year. The reason for the discontinuation of the tax-free break, however, remains unclear.
