Roanoke aims to improve parking accessibility for people with disabilities

Roanoke, Virginia – Roanoke City Council is taking a step towards creating a more accessible and inclusive community for individuals with disabilities.

In a recent meeting, the council proposed a change that would allow those with proper license plates or placards to park in any handicapped, timed, or metered space for up to 10 hours within a 24-hour period. This change, if approved, would eliminate the need for individuals to register their license plates at parking meters, making the process of parking more efficient and hassle-free.

The proposal was spearheaded by Mark Kary, who firmly believes that the change is a critical step towards improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities in Roanoke. “I think what it positions us for is leadership on the issue of ADA-accessibility, and breaking down unintended barriers,” said Kary. “It certainly wasn’t intended to make parking harder for people who need access.”

Kary’s proposed change is expected to make Roanoke one of the first cities in Virginia to adopt such a regulation, setting a precedent for the rest of the state to follow. This move, which would make parking more accessible and convenient for individuals with disabilities, is a crucial step towards creating a more inclusive and equitable society.

The proposed change is currently under consideration by the Roanoke City Council, but if approved, it will undoubtedly be a game-changer for individuals with disabilities who often struggle with parking in the downtown area. The council’s forward-thinking approach to accessibility is commendable, and it is hoped that this change will serve as a model for other cities across the country to follow.
