Virginia Tech might see additional housing for students after Board of Visitors approved an update to campus master plan
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Board of Visitors at Virginia Tech has approved an updated campus master plan, which might mean additional housing for students. Officials, however, say that it will be quite some time before work can begin on the Student Life Village.
During the entire board meeting that took place on Tuesday afternoon, members of the board discussed the matter.
The area, which is now used as the Virginia Tech Golf Course, was designated in the campus master plan to be used for student housing at some point in the future. The Student Life Village was included in the approved amendment to the master plan.
“While the resolution does not grant authority beyond the land use designation and does not authorize action or expenditures for design or construction services, it does identify a potential path to incrementally adjust residential capacity from 10,500 beds to approximately 13,700 beds,” the university said in a news release Monday afternoon.
The resolution was passed with a plurality of the board’s votes, but it did not get unanimous support.
Board members and school officials have given their word that students, representatives of the local business community, developers, and other stakeholders would be included in the planning process as it proceeds forward.
