Man arrested following a pursuit and charged with second-degree murder in connection with a Campbell County homicide

ALTAVISTA, Va. – According to the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, a man has been taken into custody in connection with a homicide that occurred in Campbell County.

On September 4, officials discovered a man dead behind the wheel of a car. The victim, subsequently identified as Jason Marcus, 40, from Appomattox County, was confirmed to have been driving when he was killed.

After a thorough investigation, the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office said they were able to get charges filed against Dashawn Hamlett, 23, of Campbell County, who they think is responsible.

After a chase of a car through Altavista, the authorities said that Hamlett was taken into custody there.

The chase came to an end near the 5500 block of Wards Road, according to the Sheriff’s Office, and officers were able to take him into custody there.

According to the statements made by the Sheriff’s Office, Hamlett has been charged with murder in the second degree and the use of a handgun during the commission of a crime. He is now being detained without release at the Lynchburg Detention Center.
