Roanoke reminds residents to help keep sidewalks safe and accessible after snowfall

Roanoke, Virginia – Following a recent snowstorm, the City of Roanoke is reminding residents and business owners of the important role they play in keeping sidewalks safe and accessible. “As you dig out from the storm, please remember to clear snow and ice from the sidewalks next to your property. Cleared sidewalks help neighbors, mail carriers, first responders, and people with mobility needs get around safely. Thanks for doing your part!” city officials emphasized in a public announcement.

According to the city’s winter safety guidelines, keeping sidewalks clear is a shared responsibility. While Roanoke’s Public Works crews handle snow removal at municipal facilities, it is up to residents and property owners to maintain the walkways adjacent to their homes and businesses. The city notes that cleared sidewalks help prevent falls and make it easier for essential services to continue uninterrupted.

Tips for Dealing with Ice

For those who find it difficult to clear snow and ice—especially the thick, compacted kind—the city offers several practical tips. Salt is most effective when applied before snowfall begins. If it’s used afterward, residents should allow time for it to begin melting the ice. However, it’s important to note that salt becomes less effective when temperatures fall below 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

To improve traction on especially slick surfaces, spreading sand, kitty litter, or gravel can help, though these materials won’t melt the ice. They can, however, reduce the risk of slipping, particularly for people using wheelchairs, strollers, or canes.

The city continues to encourage everyone to look out for their neighbors, especially the elderly or those with mobility issues who may struggle to maintain their sidewalks. By working together, Roanoke residents can help ensure that sidewalks remain safe and accessible for all throughout the winter season.
