Radford, Virginia – Before the students return to school, the Radford City Sheriff’s Office is holding a weekend summer skills camp.
Basic home repairs, archery, how to tie a fishing rod, changing a tire, and what police do during a traffic check were among the life skills presented to the children.
The free camp at Bissett Park brought over 100 youngsters and 70 volunteers.
This is something the sheriff’s office really wanted to accomplish for a long time, according to the sheriff’s office.
“It’s just an opportunity to show them things they normally wouldn’t get. I think it’s very important for kids to know how to change a tire, know how to do some basic home repairs they needed, and to know how to interact with police and if they have issues with fire, how to handle fire, 911 —all that stuff being taught today.” Radford City Sheriff Mark Armentrout said.
The sheriff’s office says they’re blown away from the amount of support from the community.
On Sunday, the camp will continue with survivor-style activities and competition.
