Green Hill Park transforms into a child’s dream playground of trucks, tools, and tasty treats on August 9 for Touch-a-Truck event

Roanoke County, Virginia – Green Hill Park in Roanoke County is gearing up for the return of one of its most popular family events-Touch-a-Truck-on Saturday, August 9th. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the park will be filled with the rumble of engines, the whirl of flashing lights, and the joyful energy of children and families exploring an array of vehicles that are rarely seen up close.

The event offers a hands-on experience where kids-and the young at heart-can climb into the driver’s seat of dump trucks, emergency vehicles, construction equipment, and more. Participants will also have the chance to meet the professionals who operate these machines every day, providing a fun and educational look at the many roles that keep the community moving.

This year’s event introduces a thoughtful new feature-a sensory-friendly hour from 9 to 10 a.m. During this quieter hour, there will be no loud sounds, sirens, or flashing lights, giving individuals with sensory sensitivities the opportunity to enjoy the event in a more relaxed atmosphere.

The full-throttle fun begins at 10 a.m. Visitors can experience a ride in a bucket truck, sponsored by Altec, or check out the foam pit thanks to Renewal by Andersen of Roanoke. There’s also a car smash station hosted by Pick-n-Save, a dig pit for aspiring construction workers, and cooling misting stations provided by Anthem Healthkeepers to beat the summer heat.

Roanoke County Parks, Recreation and Tourism will be offering free ear protection, courtesy of Intercept Health, to make sure the event remains comfortable for all guests, even during the liveliest activities.

Of course, no family outing is complete without great food. This year’s Touch-a-Truck includes a wide variety of food vendors serving up everything from BBQ and pizza to vegan dishes, sweet treats like Italian ice and kettle corn, and classic ice cream favorites.
