Girl screamed for help after the man with violent criminal history she picked up forced her to pull over and attacked her with a pocket knife before attempting to indecently assault her; man arrested

South Carolina – In a shocking incident in South Carolina, a 57-year-old man, identified as D. Brooks, has been arrested and charged with multiple offences after attempting to assault a female student. The sheriff’s office announced that Brooks is facing charges including kidnapping, grand larceny, and assault with the intent to commit criminal se-ual conduct. Authorities state that Brooks deceived the student by claiming he worked at the university and needed a ride due to his car breaking down.

Late Tuesday evening, at an off-campus apartment complex, Brooks approached the student and asked for a ride back to campus. Believing his story, the student agreed to help. As they were driving, Brooks allegedly forced her to pull into a church parking lot by threatening her with a folding razor blade knife. He then attacked and pinned her down.

A good Samaritan happened to be driving by and heard the woman’s cries for help. Acting swiftly, the passerby intervened, assisting the student in escaping from Brooks. Seizing the opportunity, Brooks then allegedly stole the student’s vehicle and fled the scene. Deputies from the neighboring county sheriff’s office spotted the stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Brooks refused to comply, leading to a brief pursuit that ended when he crashed the car. First responders quickly apprehended Brooks and took him into custody.

Officials from the university have reached out to the student to ensure she receives all necessary resources and support during her recovery. The authorities have not released further details about the incident to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. “Protecting the integrity of this investigation is paramount in providing justice for this victim,” deputies stated.

Brooks had been released from a lengthy prison sentence earlier this spring. According to the state’s offender registry, he was convicted of first-degree criminal se-ual conduct in November 2003. Reports indicate that during that prior incident, Brooks held a woman captive for 15 hours, se-ually assaulted her, and threatened her life with a knife.

Currently, Brooks is detained and awaiting legal proceedings on the new charges. The swift action of law enforcement and the courageous intervention of the good Samaritan were crucial in apprehending Brooks and preventing further harm. This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and the impact one person can make in preventing a tragedy. Authorities continue to investigate the case thoroughly to ensure justice is served.
