Roanoke trash pickup suspended after overnight snowfall and freezing temperatures
Roanoke, Virginia – Residents in Roanoke are asked to adjust their trash disposal routines after the City of Roanoke’s Solid Waste Management division announced a temporary suspension of services for Saturday, January 31, 2026. The decision comes following a significant snowfall overnight and daytime temperatures that are not expected to rise above freezing.
Officials explained that “additional snow makes operating our extremely heavy trucks dangerous on already slippery streets and roads.” With public safety as the top priority, the city has chosen to halt all solid waste operations until conditions improve. Normal service is expected to resume on Monday, February 2, weather permitting.
Residents are asked to leave full carts at the curb for pick up if it is safe to do so, and those who usually receive alley collection are encouraged to place their cans in front of their homes, again only if it is safe. This approach is intended to assist workers while minimizing the risk of accidents on slick surfaces.
Trash and Recycling Adjustments for the Week
For those who find themselves with excess waste due to the delayed service, the city has made a temporary accommodation. Residents may place up to six bags of household trash next to their carts for pickup this week. However, it is important that all bags are properly secured to prevent litter and are positioned at least three feet away from any obstructions such as mailboxes or parked vehicles.
Recycling and bulk item collection services are also temporarily suspended due to the icy conditions and will resume when it is safe to do so.
The city acknowledges the inconvenience this may cause, stating: “This decision is made out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our residents, employees and property. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
For real-time updates or assistance, residents can call the Solid Waste Customer Service Center at (540) 853-2000, Option 1, or check for announcements via social media, the City of Roanoke’s official website, or the Recycle Coach App.
