Hampton drivers advised of upcoming I-64 west ramp closure as part of HREL construction project
Hampton, Virginia – Motorists traveling westbound on Interstate 64 near LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A) in Hampton should prepare for a new traffic pattern starting as early as the night of Thursday, Jan. 22. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that, weather and scheduling permitting, contractor crews will begin a traffic shift around the work zone near LaSalle Avenue as part of the ongoing Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment project.
To accommodate ramp paving operations, traffic will be split as it approaches LaSalle Avenue. Vehicles intending to take the exit at 265A will need to stay in the far-right lane, while through traffic will be directed into the two left inside lanes. This new configuration is expected to remain in place through mid-February, depending on weather and construction progress.
Temporary Overnight Ramp Closure
As part of the traffic shift, a full overnight closure of the I-64 west off-ramp to LaSalle Avenue is scheduled to take place beginning the night of Jan. 22, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. During the closure, a signed detour will guide drivers around the affected area.
All construction schedules are weather-dependent and may change with little notice. VDOT encourages drivers to remain alert and stay informed of potential updates to avoid delays or confusion.
Motorist Safety Reminders and Travel Tools
Motorists are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, be alert to digital message signs; and drive distraction-free.
To stay up to date on current road conditions and traffic changes, VDOT recommends using its free 511 Virginia traffic tools. The 511Virginia website and mobile app, along with the 511-integrated Waze GPS app, offer real-time information on incidents, congestion, construction updates, and even weather impacts. These tools also include access to traffic cameras and live updates to help plan safer, more efficient travel routes.
The ramp and traffic shift improvements are key components of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes network, which aims to increase mobility and reduce congestion across one of the region’s busiest corridors.
