Orange Market Park and Ride Lot to close in phases for improvements as construction begins this January in Roanoke County
Salem, Virginia – Drivers in Roanoke County are being advised to prepare for temporary parking changes as a construction project begins to improve two key parking lots near the Orange Market and the Route 311/Route 419 roundabout. The work includes paving, striping, and designated space for the McAfee Knob shuttle stop, with closures impacting commuter parking availability through the summer of 2026.
Closures Begin with Larger Park and Ride Lot on January 23
The project, aimed at enhancing accessibility and improving conditions at both Orange Market parking areas, will start by gradually reducing the number of available spaces in the larger Orange Market Park and Ride Lot this week. The lot is located between Kessler Mill Road and the Orange Market entrance, and drivers can expect to see barricades and barrels placed throughout the lot in preparation for construction.
On Friday, January 23, the larger park and ride lot will fully close to the public. During this time, the smaller Hanging Rock Battlefield Trail at Orange Market Lot, located closer to Route 419, will remain open for use.
Once improvements are completed at the larger lot—anticipated by March 2026—the smaller Hanging Rock lot will close for its own round of upgrades. That closure will remain in effect until the entire project wraps up, expected in summer 2026.
Alternative Parking Options Available During Closures
Commuters are strongly encouraged to find alternate parking during these phased closures and are warned not to leave vehicles in closed lots, as towing will be enforced.
In the meantime, drivers may use the Orange Market Alternate Parking Lot, located across Route 311 (Thompson Memorial Drive) from the current park and ride. Other nearby options include the I-81 Exit 140 Park and Ride. Further details and maps of available locations can be accessed through official Virginia park and ride resources.
This project is expected to provide long-term improvements for commuters, hikers, and local traffic flow, particularly with improved support for McAfee Knob shuttle service access. However, during construction, patience and planning will be key.
