Virginia SNAP recipients face delay in November benefits due to federal shutdown

Roanoke, Virginia – The United States Department of Agriculture has informed the Commonwealth of Virginia that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November cannot be issued at this time due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, which began on October 1, 2025.

While the shutdown prevents the release of November SNAP benefits, Virginians can still use the funds already loaded onto their EBT cards to purchase food during this period. However, new benefits will not be distributed unless the federal government provides further direction before the end of October. To check their current balance, users are encouraged to call 1-866-281-2448 or use the ConnectEBT app.

In the face of this uncertainty, the Roanoke Division of Human and Social Services has confirmed it will remain open throughout the federal shutdown. Staff will continue offering support and resources to local residents while monitoring the situation closely. The department has also promised to provide updates as new information becomes available from federal authorities.

For individuals and families in immediate need of food, help is available. Residents can call 211 (211Virginia) or visit the provided state web page to find area food banks offering assistance during the shutdown. Additionally, Roanoke City Public Schools will continue serving free breakfast and lunch to all students, ensuring that children are not left without daily meals.

This shutdown has created stress for many families who rely on SNAP benefits for their monthly food needs. Without intervention or updated federal guidance, thousands of Virginians may soon face difficulty putting food on the table. State and local agencies are working to lessen the impact, but long-term solutions depend on action at the federal level.
