VDOT announces overnight closure of I-64 east in Hampton for overhead sign installation
Hampton, Virginia – Motorists traveling through Hampton on Interstate 64 should prepare for a full directional overnight closure this month as part of an ongoing infrastructure improvement project. “As early as Sept. 19, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are scheduled to implement an overnight full directional closure lasting up to four hours on I-64 east in Hampton to support an overhead sign installation as part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment project.”
Full Closure and Detour Details
The closure will take place between Rip Rap Road (exit 265C) and Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267). All eastbound lanes on I-64 in this section will be shut down from 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m., with the backup date set for September 23 in case of weather-related delays. A clearly marked detour will be in effect, guiding drivers off at exit 265C, then through North Armistead Avenue and Settlers Landing Road to reconnect with I-64 east.
To prepare for the full closure, single-lane closures will begin earlier, starting as soon as 10 p.m. on Thursday, September 18. These closures will lead up to the full shutdown at midnight.
VDOT noted that all work is weather- and schedule-dependent, and changes may occur. Motorists are advised to stay updated with traffic alerts and project notifications.
Continued Construction and Safety Reminders
This closure is one of several expected this fall to support additional overhead sign installations associated with the Hampton Roads Express Lanes project. VDOT plans to issue public notifications in advance of any future full closures.
Drivers are urged to use I-664 as an alternate route during the closure period to avoid delays and congestion near the work zone. Officials also stress the importance of safe driving practices near construction areas, reminding travelers to obey posted speed limits, stay alert to signage and digital messages, follow lane markings, and remain distraction-free.
As VDOT moves forward with enhancements to Virginia’s transportation infrastructure, these overnight operations aim to ensure long-term safety and traffic flow improvements across the Hampton Roads region.
