Southbound 95 Express Lanes in Virginia to close overnight for Neabsco Creek bridge preparation work
Dale City, Virginia – Drivers traveling on Interstate 95 in Northern Virginia should prepare for overnight closures on the 95 Express Lanes as crews perform important geotechnical work connected to the upcoming Neabsco Creek bridge project. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), closures will take place late Thursday, September 4, and into the early morning hours of Friday, September 5, weather permitting.
The work will begin with a short closure of the left lane on the southbound 95 Express Lanes near the Dale Boulevard exit. That lane will be closed between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday. Following this, the entire southbound 95 Express Lanes will close from 10 p.m. Thursday until 1 a.m. Friday.
During the full closure, several ramps will also be blocked, including the Opitz Boulevard ramp to the southbound Express Lanes and the ramp from the southbound I-95 general purpose lanes near mile marker 156.5, just beyond the Dale Boulevard interchange.
Detours and Traffic Patterns
Traffic on the southbound Express Lanes will be diverted onto the southbound I-95 general purpose lanes using the flyover ramp at Dale Boulevard. Drivers will be able to return to the Express Lanes further south by taking the flyover ramp located just past the Telegraph Road overpass in Stafford County, about a mile and a half beyond Exit 148 to Marine Corps Base Quantico.
From 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. Friday, the Express Lanes will remain closed again to allow for the regularly scheduled lane reversal from southbound to northbound operations. By the time the reversal is complete at 3 a.m., the Neabsco Creek work zone will be cleared.
Part of a Larger Bridge Project
The geotechnical work is a critical step in preparing for construction of a new I-95 southbound bridge over Neabsco Creek. That project is scheduled to begin in mid-2027 and is part of VDOT’s long-term effort to improve travel safety and efficiency on one of the busiest highways in the state.
