Motorists advised to use detour routes as Griffin Road in Prince George County stays closed

Prince George, Virginia – A stretch of Route 628, also known as Griffin Road, in Prince George County will remain closed to through traffic indefinitely as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues to evaluate and repair significant flood-related damage. The closure affects the portion of Griffin Road located between Route 608 (College Road) and Route 629 (Birdsong Road), following heavy flooding that occurred on July 15.

VDOT crews are actively assessing the extent of damage and working on repairs to ensure the road can safely reopen. No official reopening date has been announced yet, as officials stress the need for careful evaluation before allowing vehicle traffic through the area again.

Detour in Place for Northbound and Southbound Travelers

In the meantime, motorists are advised to follow posted detour signs and plan for additional travel time.

For those heading northbound, the detour begins by traveling south on Route 608 (College Road) to Route 608 (Gary’s Church Road). Drivers should then turn left and travel east to Route 301 (S. Crater Road), turn left again to travel north, and finally turn left once more onto Route 629 (Birdsong Road) to reach Griffin Road from the west.

For those traveling southbound, the detour leads east on Route 629 (Birdsong Road) to Route 301 (S. Crater Road), where drivers should turn right and continue south. From there, take another right turn onto Route 608 (Gary’s Church Road), and then a final right onto Route 608 (College Road) to travel north back toward Route 628 (Griffin Road).

Officials are urging drivers to remain cautious near the closure zone and adhere strictly to the detour for their safety and the safety of road crews. VDOT will provide updates as progress is made and when the road is deemed safe for public use.
