Road work on I64 in Hampton scheduled to begin July 7 with overnight closures and delays
Hampton, Virginia – Drivers on I-64 in Hampton should prepare for a series of brief, overnight traffic stoppages beginning as early as July 8 as part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Segment project. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), contractor crews are set to carry out intermittent closures to support the installation of new overhead signage.
The initial plan included a full overnight closure of I-64 on July 8, but officials have now confirmed that a full closure will no longer be necessary to complete the task. Instead, traffic will be stopped briefly in both directions while the sign structure is positioned overhead.
The intermittent stoppages are scheduled to take place between 12:01 a.m. and 4 a.m. from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267) to North Armistead Avenue/LaSalle Avenue (exit 265). Should weather or other conditions delay the work, a backup date has been set for Wednesday, July 9, during the same time frame.
In preparation for the sign work, crews will begin single-lane closures along I-64 at 10 p.m. on July 7. These lane reductions will continue into the early hours of July 8 until the sign is in place. Motorists can expect additional temporary closures and detours throughout the summer and fall as the project progresses and more signs are installed. VDOT assures that advance notice will be provided for any future full closures.
“Motorists are encouraged to use I-664 as an alternate route to avoid the work area when possible and are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free,” officials stated.
The schedule is dependent on weather conditions and may change. Travelers are advised to stay updated on traffic alerts and plan accordingly.
