Overnight closures and delays expected on U.S. 29/250 Bypass for Old Ivy Road bridge project

Culpeper, Virginia – Drivers in Albemarle County should prepare for significant overnight traffic impacts on the U.S. 29/250 Bypass as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) advances its project to replace the aging Route 601 (Old Ivy Road) bridge. Beginning Monday, June 9, VDOT’s contractor will initiate beam-setting operations underneath the existing bridge, leading to temporary stoppages and full closures over several nights.

According to VDOT, the construction work will require intermittent 15-minute stoppages from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., starting Monday, June 9 and continuing through Thursday, June 12. These stoppages will be controlled by flagging crews, and drivers are urged to exercise caution and comply with all posted signs and traffic direction.

More significant impacts will occur on Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14, when the U.S. 29/250 Bypass will be completely closed overnight between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. both nights.

Local and Regional Detour Routes Announced

During the full closures, detours will be in place for both local and regional traffic:

  • Local northbound traffic on the bypass will be rerouted using U.S. 250 (Ivy Road) and U.S. 29 Business (Emmet Street).

  • Local southbound traffic on U.S. 29 will follow Emmet Street, turn right onto Ivy Road, then rejoin the bypass via a left-hand connection.

  • Regional northbound travelers, including commercial vehicles, should detour via Interstate 64 east at U.S. 29 (Monacan Trail), take exit 124, then follow U.S. 250 west (Richmond Road) to reconnect with U.S. 29 north of Charlottesville.

  • Regional southbound traffic will follow the same route in reverse.

The Old Ivy Road bridge, originally constructed in 1961, is being replaced due to structural deficiencies that no longer meet current safety standards. Construction began on February 3, 2025, and the entire project is slated for completion by July 2026.

VDOT continues to advise all drivers to expect delays, drive cautiously, and follow detour signage during this crucial phase of the bridge replacement effort.
