Major construction work on I-495 expected to impact travel until March

Fairfax, Virginia – Drivers in Virginia should prepare for overnight lane closures and intermittent traffic stoppages on northbound I-495 between Route 7 and north of the Dulles Toll Road. These disruptions, scheduled through Saturday, March 1, are necessary for continued construction of a new 495 Express Lanes ramp at the I-495 and Dulles Corridor Interchange.

Scheduled Closures and Ramp Shutdowns

Lane and ramp closures will take place between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. on designated nights throughout the construction period, except for Sunday, February 23. During these hours, the ramp from eastbound Dulles Toll Road/Airport Access Highway (Route 267) to northbound I-495 will also be closed nightly.

Detour Information for Affected Drivers

Drivers impacted by the ramp closure should follow the posted detour route:

  • Exit onto I-495 South using Exit 18A toward Richmond
  • Take Exit 46B for Route 123/Chain Bridge Road North
  • Continue in the ramp lane and immediately merge onto I-495 North

Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and expect possible delays while work continues in the area.

Potential Schedule Changes

In case of inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances, the construction timeline may be adjusted. Updates will be provided as needed, and drivers are encouraged to stay alert and exercise caution when traveling through the work zone.
