Virginians encouraged to serve as Officers of Election
Richmond, Virginia – Governor Glenn Youngkin is urging Virginians to sign up as Officers of Election to ensure the upcoming November elections are accurate and secure. The call coincides with National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, observed on August 1st by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, highlighting the essential role of election officers.
“On National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, I am asking every eligible voter in Virginia to consider serving their community as an officer of election. We are incredibly grateful for Virginia’s Officers of Election who staff polling places and check-in voters but we need more officers,” said Governor Youngkin. “As we approach a presidential election, please consider volunteering so we can ensure accurate and secure elections in the Commonwealth and in your community.”
The Role of Officers of Election
Each year, thousands of Virginia voters engage in the election process not only by casting their ballots but also by working in polling places as Officers of Election. These officers are crucial in maintaining the integrity and smooth operation of elections. They manage polling locations, check in voters, and ensure the voting process runs efficiently.
Virginia requires more than 20,000 officers to staff all Election Day and early voting locations across the state. This high demand highlights the importance of community involvement in the election process.
Qualifications and Compensation
Officers of Election must be qualified Virginia voters. Interested individuals can review the requirements and fill out an online application on the Virginia Department of Elections website. Officers are compensated for their service, and Virginia law mandates that employers allow employees serving as election officers to take leave on Election Day without using vacation time or facing disciplinary actions.
Upcoming Elections
Election Day is scheduled for November 5, 2024, with early voting starting on Friday, September 20. The Virginia ballot will feature races for president, all 11 congressional districts, a Senate seat, and various local offices.
How to Get Involved
Governor Youngkin’s appeal underscores the critical need for community participation to ensure a transparent and efficient election process. Virginians are encouraged to take this opportunity to contribute to their community and uphold the democratic process.
