Roanoke City Public Schools and YMCA partner to offer morning programs for middle schoolers

Roanoke, Virginia – Roanoke City Public Schools have announced an exciting partnership with the YMCA of Virginia’s Blue Ridge to offer a new before-school program designed specifically for middle school students. This initiative is set to roll out in the 2024-2025 school year, providing a productive start to the day for many young learners.

The collaboration comes as a response to the adjusted school start times for middle schools beginning this fall. The programs are scheduled to run from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at three locations: James Breckinridge Middle School, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and the YMCA Express at Gainsboro. These sites were strategically chosen to accommodate students across the district, ensuring easy access for all middle schoolers.

Families interested should contact the YMCA for more information: https://ymcavbr.org/forms/contact-us/. Details regarding the pricing and registration for the program will be available next week, as YMCA staff are currently finalizing the arrangements.

This program promises not only to enrich students’ mornings with engaging activities but also to align with parents’ schedules, offering a safe and constructive environment for children before the official school day begins.

As a college student, making an extra buck now and then was very important. I started as a part-time reporter since I was 19 yo, and I couldn’t believe it might become a long-time career. I'm happy to be part of the Virginian Tribune's team.
