Roanoke Parks and Recreation honors volunteers in milestone trail celebration
Roanoke, Virginia – The City of Roanoke has recently achieved the commendable milestone of managing over 100 miles of trails and greenways through its Department of Parks and Recreation. This accomplishment encompasses the 60 miles of natural trails at Carvins Cove, approximately 12 paved miles of the Roanoke River Greenway, and the notable 0.22-mile Watchtower Trail on Mill Mountain.
The Department of Parks and Recreation has attributed this significant achievement to the sustained volunteer efforts and the city’s dedication to trail and greenway development over the years. In appreciation of these collective contributions, Roanoke Parks and Recreation will host a “Celebration of 100+ Miles of Trails and Greenways” on National Public Lands Day, set for September 23.
Introduced in 1994, National Public Lands Day (NPLD) stands as the largest single-day volunteer event across the nation. This year, volunteers are set to further enhance local trails, with a focus on Corridor 12, as part of the Mill Mountain Trails Plan, as informed by the department.
Renee Powers, Trails and Greenways Coordinator for Roanoke Parks and Recreation, emphasized, “Volunteers are truly the backbone of our trails and greenways. Without their hard work and passion, we would not have over 100 miles to celebrate. We are very excited to have reached this milestone, and looking forward to recognizing the incredible individuals and organizations that have made it possible.”
The National Public Lands Day project will commence at 8:00 a.m., with participants gathering at the Mill Mountain Star Trail parking zone located on Riverland Road. The department recommends wearing work-appropriate attire, inclusive of closed-toed shoes and sun protection. Necessary equipment and guidelines will be provided, though prior registration, while recommended, isn’t obligatory.
Post the trail work, Starr Hill Pilot Brewery will host a celebratory event honoring the 100+ Miles of Trails and Greenways from noon onward. All trail and greenway enthusiasts are welcomed to partake in the celebration, with the day’s offerings featuring acknowledgments for volunteers, giveaways, and enlightening discussions from key contributors. Drinks are available for purchase at the brewery, while NPLD participants will be treated to a complimentary t-shirt, lunch, and a drink ticket.
In addition to the celebrations, the Department of Parks and Recreation will introduce an interactive Story Map, aiming to offer an insightful journey through the greenway’s evolution, inclusive of historic images and detailed insights into the volunteer groups that were instrumental in crafting the trail and greenway system.
