Roanoke police alert Kia and Hyundai owners following a spike in social media-driven thefts

Roanoke, Virginia – The City of Roanoke Police Department has issued a notice indicating a rising trend in vehicle thefts. The report suggests that perpetrators are exploiting information found in viral videos on social media platforms to unlawfully seize particular models of cars. The vehicles in question are Kias and Hyundais manufactured between 2011 and 2021, equipped with turn-to-start ignition systems.

The law enforcement agency has assured owners of newer models or those with push-to-start ignition systems, which feature engine immobilizers, that they remain unaffected by this threat.

In order to safeguard the vehicles, owners are advised to contact their nearest car dealership promptly, as solutions in the form of cutting-edge protective technologies are now available. In instances where this may not be feasible, the police department has offered additional protective measures.

“Securing your vehicle is paramount. Utilize wheel or pedal locks to ensure that your vehicle remains stationary even if an unauthorized individual attempts to drive it. Position your vehicle in the field of view of security cameras with recording capabilities,” recommended Community Resource Officer Underwood of the City of Roanoke Police Department.

Hyundai has acknowledged the issue, stating that these viral trends have revealed vulnerabilities in their older anti-theft systems, leading to targeted thefts across the United States. The auto manufacturer has responded by launching a complimentary software upgrade to bolster their anti-theft devices. As per Hyundai, approximately four million vehicles sold from 2011 to 2022 now qualify for this free upgrade.

Nonetheless, Hyundai’s website specifies that not all models may be compatible with the upgrade. Owners of these incompatible vehicles may qualify for a refund for a steering wheel lock or other anti-theft accessories. More details about this and other frequently asked questions can be found on the company’s website.
