City of Roanoke renames street to honor Reverend Dr. R.R. Wilkinson
Roanoke, Virginia – The City of Roanoke is set to pay tribute to Reverend Dr. R.R. Wilkinson by renaming Carver Ave. NW to R.R. Wilkinson Ave NW on June 16th.
The commemorative event will be held at the junction of Fifth Street and the newly designated R.R Wilkinson Ave NW (formerly known as Carver Ave NW) on the aforementioned date, commencing at 11 a.m. This follows a unanimous decision taken by the Roanoke City Council to rename the street on March 20th.
Reverend Dr. R.R. Wilkinson has been an influential figure in Roanoke’s history, having dedicated himself to the fight for equality during the era of segregation. His services as the pastor of Hill Street Baptist Church for over three decades have left an indelible mark on the community. In addition to his pastoral role, he was instrumental in the closure of the Washington Park dump, another significant contribution to the city’s betterment.
The City of Roanoke extends an invitation to the local community to partake in the festivities and acknowledge Reverend Wilkinson’s substantial influence on the city’s cultural and historical fabric. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from representatives of the religious community and family members of Reverend Wilkinson.
