Montgomery County disbands Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad amid national volunteer shortage
Shawsville, Virginia – The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors has resolved to formally disband the Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, following a unanimous vote. The Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad has been a significant contributor to the county’s emergency services.
Future emergency calls from the unincorporated regions of the county will henceforth be addressed by the county’s own fire and EMS teams. This decision comes in the wake of last month’s announcement that the two properties belonging to the volunteer squad were put up for sale.
The Board of Supervisors expressed its deep gratitude for the invaluable service rendered by the volunteers over the years. Montgomery County Supervisor, Steve Fijalkowski, highlighted that the volunteers who wish to continue their service have been extended an opportunity to contribute to the county’s fire and EMS teams. This provision, he affirmed, will remain in place.
The Supervisors acknowledged the unfortunate necessity of the decision, reiterating that the decline in volunteerism is a widespread issue that is being grappled with by localities across the nation.
Despite the dissolution of the Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, the spirit of volunteerism they embodied will continue to be honored through the ongoing provision for their integration into the county’s emergency response teams.
