New Aviation Mechanics Program for students is in the works, the Cougars and the Knights team up for the project
DANVILLE, Virginia – The Cougars and the Knights are working together to make a new program for their students in aviation mechanics.
Averett has been training future pilots for 40 years, but they’ve never had a program for keeping their planes in good shape.
“Because we work in aviation, we knew there was a big need for Aviation Maintenance Technicians. “Right now, all we do is train pilots. So, that’s when the discussion with DCC began.”
Students at DCC will be able to use the program to get their associate’s degree in Aviation Mechanics. They can then go to Averett to get their bachelor’s degree.
This will be only the fifth program in the state.
Dr. Cornelius Johnson, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services at DCC, said, “We know that Danville already has a thriving economy that is growing.” “We already think that having an Aviation Mechanics Program will help the economy grow.”
The program will take place at the Aviation Center in Danville, but the current building may need to be expanded to accommodate more students.
“We appreciate Averett’s help in making this path. Maintenance of aircraft is a growing field of work. Over the next 10 years, data shows, will grow by at least 6%. That means that about 13,000 jobs will be created all over the country. So, DCC thinks that we can help solve this problem by creating a steady stream of workers.
In the fall of 2024, the new Aviation Mechanics program will take off.
