Convicted felon in Roanoke sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of firearm charges
Roanoke, Virginia – A Roanoke, Virginia man has been sentenced to 108 months in federal prison after using an illegally possessed firearm to shoot another man in the back. James Aaron Haburn, 32, was convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon following a bench trial in October 2024.
Illegal Firearm Use Leads to Federal Conviction
According to court documents and trial evidence, Haburn was stopped by law enforcement in November 2022. During the traffic stop, police discovered a stolen Smith & Wesson pistol tucked into his waistband. Further investigation revealed that just 34 hours before his arrest, Haburn had used the same firearm to shoot a man in the back following a confrontation outside a Roanoke business.
Federal Agencies Lead Investigation
The Roanoke City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) handled the investigation, which led to Haburn’s conviction.
Acting U.S. Attorney Zachary T. Lee and Anthony Spotswood, Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Division of the ATF, jointly made the announcement regarding Haburn’s sentencing.
With this federal conviction, authorities emphasize their commitment to removing violent offenders from the community and enforcing strict federal firearm laws.
