Security concerns lead to prohibition of DeepSeek AI on government technology in Virginia

Richmond, Virginia – Governor Glenn Youngkin has issued Executive Order 46, effectively banning the use of China’s DeepSeek AI on all state-issued devices and government-run networks in Virginia. The decision comes as part of a broader effort to protect state operations and information from potential security risks linked to foreign technology.

Concerns Over Cybersecurity and Data Protection

Governor Youngkin emphasized the potential threat posed by DeepSeek AI, stating:

“China’s DeepSeek AI poses a threat to the security and safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. We must continue to take steps to safeguard our operations and information from the Chinese Communist Party. This executive order is an important part of that undertaking.”

This directive ensures that no state agency employee may download, install, or use DeepSeek AI on any government-issued devices, including:

  • State-issued cell phones
  • Laptops and desktop computers
  • Tablets and other internet-connected devices

Additionally, accessing the DeepSeek AI application through any Commonwealth-run network is strictly prohibited.

Strengthening Cybersecurity Policies

The ban aligns with ongoing national concerns about foreign technology companies and the potential risks they pose in cybersecurity, data privacy, and state security. By blocking DeepSeek AI, Virginia aims to strengthen its defenses against possible data breaches and surveillance threats linked to foreign entities.
