Arlington man beats the odds and cashes in on Powerball winnings

Arlington, Virginia – Mark Dinapoli from Arlington was stunned when his Powerball ticket turned into a $100,000 prize. His big win came from the October 12 drawing after purchasing the ticket at Harris Teeter, located at 900 Army Navy Drive in Arlington.

“It feels invigorating!” Dinapoli shared with Virginia Lottery officials when he claimed his winnings.

The winning numbers for that night’s drawing were 5-14-20-41-57, with a Powerball number of 6. Dinapoli managed to match four of the first five numbers and the Powerball, earning him a base prize of $50,000. However, because he opted for the Power Play® feature by paying an extra dollar, his prize doubled to an impressive $100,000.

Powerball’s High Stakes and Big Rewards

Powerball drawings take place three times a week—on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. While the jackpot is the ultimate goal, players have several ways to win lower-tier prizes, as Dinapoli proved. The odds of matching all six numbers to claim the grand prize are a staggering 1 in 292.2 million. However, the overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are a much more achievable 1 in 25.

Players interested in learning more about the game can visit the Powerball website for details on jackpots, past winners, and prize breakdowns.

Lottery Proceeds Benefit Virginia Schools

Beyond individual wins, every Virginia Lottery ticket contributes to public education. Dinapoli’s hometown of Arlington received over $6.3 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. Statewide, the Virginia Lottery raised over $934 million in Fiscal Year 2024, which accounts for roughly 10 percent of the total K-12 school budget.
