Southbound lane closure planned for Ft. Lee Road overpass following bridge damage

Petersburg, Virginia – Starting Monday, January 27, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will implement a lane closure on the southbound side of the Ft. Lee Road overpass that crosses Interstate 85 in Petersburg. This action is being taken as a safety precaution due to structural damage sustained when a vehicle struck the bridge. Construction to repair the overpass is set to begin in the fall of 2025.

Traffic Detours and Alternate Routes

While the southbound lane will remain open with a controlled closure operation, motorists traveling northbound will need to follow specific detour routes to navigate around the affected area. VDOT has provided detailed alternate routes to minimize disruptions and ensure smooth traffic flow.

  • Northbound traffic approaching from the east: Drivers should continue west on Boydton Plank Road and turn right onto Dupuy Road, then travel north to Ft. Lee Road.
  • Northbound traffic approaching from the west: Travelers should continue east on Boydton Plank Road, turn left onto Youngs Road, and head north to Dupuy Road. From there, they should turn left and travel south to Ft. Lee Road.
  • Northbound truck traffic approaching from the west: Truck drivers should continue east on Boydton Plank Road and proceed onto Halifax Street. From Halifax Street, they should travel north to West Washington Street, turn left, and head west to McKenney Street. From McKenney Street, they should turn left and travel south to Dupuy Road, then turn right and travel south to Ft. Lee Road.
