Annual Student Registered Apprenticeship Showcase set to take place this week in Roanoke
Roanoke, Virginia – The highly anticipated annual Student Registered Apprenticeship Showcase is set to take place on January 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Berglund Center Special Events Center. This event provides a valuable opportunity for students interested in applying for a registered apprenticeship for the next school year to connect with partner businesses and gain insights into various apprenticeship opportunities.
Exploring Career Pathways Through Apprenticeships
Managed by the Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement (VDWDA), the registered apprenticeship program provides a unique work-based learning experience for students aged 16 to 18. The program allows students to gain hands-on experience while working towards industry-recognized credentials. Apprentices receive employment training and instruction directly from their partner companies, helping them develop the skills necessary to thrive in their chosen career paths.
Upon completing the apprenticeship, students become eligible for a Journeyman’s license, a credential that demonstrates their professional training and positions them for future success in their field. This widely recognized certification serves as a stepping stone toward becoming a master in their respective industries.
A Growing Initiative with Expanding Opportunities
The Student Registered Apprenticeship program first launched in 2017 as a pilot initiative led by Roanoke County Public Schools, VDWDA, and the Western Virginia Water Authority. Over the years, the program has expanded to include Salem City Public Schools and Roanoke City Public Schools, broadening its reach and impact. Today, more than two dozen businesses participate in the program, offering students a variety of career opportunities in different industries. Many students who have completed the program have gone on to secure full-time positions with their partner businesses after graduation.
How to Participate
Students who wish to take advantage of this exciting opportunity are encouraged to register in advance. The showcase provides a chance to meet potential employers, explore different career options, and understand the requirements and expectations of an apprenticeship.
