Member One funds programs for veterans, education, and food security across Virginia

Roanoke, Virginia – As part of its annual “Season of Giving” campaign, Virginia Credit Union’s Member One division has announced a sizable contribution to local charities totaling $145,000. This generous contribution emphasizes the organization’s commitment to improve the quality of life for Virginian citizens through consistent support to several community-based projects.

Member One has carefully allocated money to 14 charity organizations, each chosen for their significant local impact, between November and December. Groups dedicated to veteran services, food security, health care, and educational programs meant to empower young people stand among the recipients of these gifts.

“We’re proud to support our community partners and their vital work,” said Member One Market President Tim Rowe in a press release. “Giving back to the communities in which we live and work is an integral part of our mission, and our donations are an important way we acknowledge the charities and organizations that strengthen our communities. The programs and initiatives we support are having a positive, even life-changing, impact for our friends, neighbors and families.”

One very noteworthy gift was a $25,000 donation to the Carilion Clinic Foundation. This money is set specifically to support pediatric cancer treatment inside the over a million-person Roanoke-based healthcare network. HumanKind also received another major gift of $20,000 to help their Early Head Start program in Lynchburg, which offers vital family-oriented services including childcare and financial coaching.

New River Community Action Inc. also received $20,000 to support Virginia CARES, a program dedicated to assisting individuals reintegrating into society post-incarceration. Other funds were set aside for Junior Achievement of Southwest Virginia, which got $10,000 to help young people pursue personal finance and entrepreneurship, and Feeding Southwest Virginia, which also got $10,000 to keep their food distribution programs running throughout the area.

Little but yet equally significant contributions to Beans and Rice, West End Center for Youth, LEAP (Local Environmental Agriculture Project), Lynchburg Grows each $5,000. Each organization is extremely important in advancing youth growth, educational possibilities, and food security.

The “Season of Giving” this year was extended to include Member One cardholders in the decision-making process, therefore enabling them to personally participate in the charitable endeavors by choosing five local NGOs to get donations. This community-driven approach resulted in an $8,000 donation each to organizations like the National Center for Healthy Veterans, Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center, Neighbors Helping Neighbors of Amherst County, Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center, and the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
