Old Route 100 in Pulaski County set for six-week closure due to pipe replacement

Salem, Virginia – Starting on October 14, a crucial infrastructure upgrade will commence on Old Route 100 in Pulaski County, leading to its closure to facilitate the replacement of an aging pipe beneath Interstate 81. This essential maintenance work is scheduled to last approximately six weeks, with the road expected to reopen to the public around December 1, depending on weather conditions.

The specific section of Old Route 100 to be closed spans about half a mile. It is situated 0.4 miles north of Route 658 (Greenbriar Road) and extends to one mile south of Route 99 (Count Pulaski Drive). Despite the closure, local residents will maintain access to their homes, ensuring minimal disruption to their daily lives.

Detour and Traffic Management

To circumvent the closure, through traffic will be redirected via Interstate 81, utilizing exits 92 (Draper) and 94. This detour is particularly recommended for those traveling to the Draper business district or aiming to reach the New River Trail Park trailhead, with exit 92 being the designated route for these destinations.

In addition to roadwork on Old Route 100, the project includes installing a temporary barrier wall at mile marker 93.2 under I-81. This installation will cause shoulder closures for a few weeks as part of the safety measures in place to protect commuters and workers alike.
