Governor Youngkin announces $8 million investment by UK electric vehicle manufacturer in Virginia

Richmond, Virginia – Governor Glenn Youngkin has announced a significant investment in Virginia’s automotive industry, with RBW Sports & Classics, a UK manufacturer of electric classic sports cars, selecting Danville as the site for its new manufacturing facility. This initiative, fueled by a $35 million state-funded project, is set to create 144 jobs and marks a major step in Virginia’s drive towards becoming a leader in the electric vehicle sector.

Investment and Job Creation

RBW Sports & Classics will invest $8 million to set up its manufacturing operations at the Cane Creek Centre, a strategic move supported by a $23 million local match and up to $37 million in private sector investments. This facility will focus on producing the company’s innovative left-hand drive EV Roadster and GT models, specifically designed for the U.S. market.

Governor Youngkin expressed his enthusiasm about the project, highlighting its alignment with Virginia’s economic goals. “Entrepreneurial, innovative companies like RBW Sports & Classics are helping put Virginia on the map for cutting-edge industry and jobs,” he stated. The choice of location reflects the region’s robust manufacturing capabilities and skilled workforce, essential for RBW’s ambitious plans.

Local and State Support

The decision to establish operations in Virginia was also influenced by comprehensive local and state support, including a $500,000 grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund and additional training support through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program. This collaboration underscores Virginia’s commitment to fostering a pro-business environment and supporting innovative industries.

Secretary of Commerce and Trade Caren Merrick remarked on the state’s role in facilitating such high-tech investments, asserting that Virginia is a prime destination for pioneering automotive companies due to its skilled workforce and competitive business climate.

Community Impact and Responses

The project has been met with positive responses from local leaders. Danville Mayor Alonzo Jones and Senator Tammy Mulchi both praised the economic and cultural benefits that RBW will bring to the area. “Today’s announcement is a milestone moment for Danville and Pittsylvania County,” said Mayor Jones, emphasizing the job opportunities and new technologies that the facility will introduce to the local community.

Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors Chairman Darrell Dalton and Delegate Danny Marshall shared their excitement about the potential for community growth and technological advancement. Marshall highlighted the unique blend of classic car aesthetics and modern technology that RBW brings, which is expected to generate considerable local interest and economic activity.

A Vision for the Future

The RBW facility not only represents a significant economic development for Southern Virginia but also a strategic extension of the region’s existing automotive and high-tech manufacturing base. Linda Green, Executive Director of the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance, expressed confidence in the region’s ability to support RBW’s ambitions, citing its strategic location and the availability of a skilled workforce.

T. Neal Morris, Chairman of the Industrial Development Authority of Danville, sees the investment as a testament to the region’s promising future in high-tech manufacturing and its ability to attract global players like RBW.
