Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin signs series of bills aimed at improving services for developmentally disabled

Richmond, Virginia – Governor Glenn Youngkin has taken significant steps to enhance support for Virginians with developmental disabilities by signing 18 new bills. This legislative package, noted for its bipartisan support, focuses on improving inclusivity and accessibility across several critical sectors including education, recreation, law enforcement, and transitional services.

Governor Youngkin emphasized his commitment to this community during the signing ceremony. “For far too long, Virginia has underserved this community, and as Governor, I committed to transform our level of care, support, and resources available to Virginians with developmental disabilities. I will always advocate, champion and speak up for Virginians, and I’m pleased this legislative package and our Right Help, Right Now plan has instituted life-changing impacts that will benefit Virginia families, this community, and transform our level of care for Virginians with developmental disabilities for decades to come,” he stated.

Additionally, the recently signed biennium budget includes significant financial provisions aimed at further supporting this initiative. A total of $247 million has been allocated for 3,440 priority one waiver slots. This funding increase under Youngkin’s leadership brings the total to 4,540 additional slots, marking a substantial increase in the state’s capacity to aid those with developmental disabilities.

This legislative and financial push underlines Virginia’s evolving approach to developmental disability services, ensuring that affected individuals receive the support and resources they need for a better quality of life. These changes represent a forward-thinking commitment to inclusivity and proper care, setting a precedent for future initiatives in the state.
