Explore Park hosts Eco-Fest with educational activities and fun for all ages

Roanoke, Virginia – Roanoke County is set to host Eco-Fest at Explore Park on Saturday, July 13, featuring a full day of activities and workshops designed to promote environmental awareness and conservation. This event is an excellent opportunity for community members to learn about protecting our natural environment through a variety of hands-on activities and educational sessions. Here’s a detailed schedule of the day’s events.

River Clean-Up – 9 AM to 11 AM

The day will start with a river clean-up along the Roanoke River. Volunteers will meet at Journey’s End and work together to remove debris and trash from the riverbanks. Participants are advised to wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. All necessary clean-up supplies will be provided on-site.

Rainbarrel Workshop – 10:30 AM & 11:30 AM

Two sessions of the Rainbarrel Workshop will be offered, each accommodating up to 12 participants. Sponsored by Friends of the Blue Ridge and hosted by Clean Valley Council, this workshop will teach attendees how to create and use rain barrels to collect and recycle rainwater. Spaces are limited, so early sign-up is recommended.

TRASH – Reuse and Upcycle – 10 AM to 3 PM

Discover innovative ways to transform trash into treasure at the TRASH workshop. Participants will learn to create jewelry, accessories, and clothing from recycled materials. This creative session will inspire attendees to see the potential in everyday waste.

Guided Hike with the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Society of American Foresters – 10 AM & 12:30 PM

Explore Park’s natural beauty on a guided hike with expert guides from the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Society of American Foresters. These hikes will provide informative insights into the local ecosystem and forestry practices.

Water Education by Western Virginia Water Authority – 10 AM to 3 PM

Interactive displays and activities will focus on water conservation and education, offering valuable information on how to use water resources wisely and sustainably.

Water and Soil Education by Mountain Castles Soil & Water Conservation District – 10 AM to 3 PM

Engage in hands-on activities and educational displays that highlight the importance of soil and water conservation. Learn about maintaining a sustainable environment through healthy soil and clean water practices.

Solar Ovens, Sun Dials, and Sun Prints – 10 AM to 3 PM

Experience the power of the sun with activities focused on solar ovens, sun dials, and sun prints. This session will demonstrate how solar energy can be harnessed and used in everyday applications.

VA Master Naturalist Booth: All Day

Visit the VA Master Naturalist Booth to learn about local wildlife, conservation efforts, and how you can get involved in protecting natural resources.

Sweet Surrender Snack Vendor: All Day

Take a break and enjoy some delicious ice cream from the Sweet Surrender Snack Vendor, available throughout the day.
