Leaders of Virginia colleges commit to protect student benefits during policy transition
Richmond, Virginia – Governor Glenn Youngkin has announced a significant commitment from the leaders of Virginia’s public colleges and universities, including the chancellor of the Commonwealth’s community college system. These leaders have agreed to take all necessary actions to ensure that no student or prospective student is adversely impacted by the temporary gap before the passage and signing of HB 6004 and SB 6012.
Assurance for Military and First Responder Families
The commitment comes as a response to concerns about the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program and other similarly impacted programs. These programs faced eligibility changes that could have negatively affected students during the gap from July 1 until the new legislation is enacted.
“Today, I personally spoke with the Presidents of all 16 public colleges and universities in the Commonwealth, as well as the Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System, and everyone agreed to not allow this gap in time to disadvantage or harm our military heroes, first responders, and their families,” stated Governor Glenn Youngkin.
Legislative Action and Funding
Governor Youngkin highlighted the importance of the upcoming legislative session scheduled for July 18, where the House and Senate will address HB 6004 and SB 6012. These bills aim to fully repeal and reverse the changes to tuition waiver eligibility, ensuring continued support for military families and first responders. The proposed legislation also includes a substantial financial commitment, providing $65 million annually for the program.
“I look forward to the House and Senate returning on July 18th as announced and sending to my desk HB 6004 and SB 6012, which fully repeal the damaging language, without caveats or conditions, and provide a total of $65 million in each year of the biennium to this important program,” Governor Youngkin added.
Ensuring Continued Support
This proactive approach by Virginia’s educational leaders, in collaboration with Governor Youngkin, underscores a shared commitment to supporting the educational needs of military and first responder families. By ensuring that no student is adversely affected during the legislative transition, Virginia reaffirms its dedication to those who serve and protect the community.
