ROANOKE, Va. — The developers of the Mountain Valley Pipeline have been given an additional four years by the federal authorities in charge of monitoring the project to finish the long-delayed natural gas pipeline.
The decision was reached late on Tuesday night by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission with a unanimous vote.
The new deadline for finishing the 303-mile pipeline that runs through parts of Virginia and West Virginia is October 2026. In June, Mountain Valley submitted a request for the extension.
The decision has faced opposition from environmental groups and has had numerous permits tossed by the courts.
The people behind the project were happy with FERC’s decision and expressed their intention to finish the pipeline by the end of 2023.
