Vinton police: Grass clippings on roads are a Class 1 Misdemeanor

Vinton, Virginia – The Vinton Police Department has taken to social media platforms in a bid to educate the public about road safety, particularly with regards to grass clippings.

As per the police statement, discarding grass clippings onto the road constitutes a Class 1 Misdemeanor under the Code of Virginia (18.2-324). This regulation clearly states that no individual is permitted to throw or deposit any substance on the road that might pose a risk to road users.

Grass clippings, in particular, are known to create a slippery surface, posing a significant hazard, particularly to motorcyclists and bicyclists navigating our roads, as conveyed by the police.

In the spirit of collective responsibility and safety, the police department further appealed to the public, “Let’s all look out for each other and keep our roadways safe.”
