Fatal shooting in the William Fleming High School neighborhood in Roanoke placed the school at “hold-and-secure” for nearly an hour

ROANOKE, Virginia – Hold-and-secure was lifted from Roanoke’s William Fleming High School after about 50 minutes on Wednesday, while police looked into a fatal shooting in the area.

On February 15, 2023, at about 2:10 p.m., a man with a gunshot wound was reported in the 3500 block of Ferncliff Avenue NW. When the victim was taken to a hospital, he or she died. No one knows what his name is.

Police found out that a woman who had left the scene was someone they were interested in. Police say that officers found her not far from the scene and took her into custody so that she could talk to detectives.

Anyone who knows anything about what happened should call (540) 344-8500. You can also send a text message to 274637. Start the message with “RoanokePD” to make sure it gets sent. Calls and texts can be made without being traced.

Roanoke City Schools sent this message to families at the start of the investigation:

Good morning. This is a very important message from Tracey Anderson, the head of William Fleming High School. William Fleming is currently on a “hold and secure” because there is police activity in the area and the police want to be extra careful. While the school is on hold and safe, students who were supposed to leave early will also stay. We’ll let you know when the hold and secure is no longer in place. “Hold and secure” means that all of our students stay inside the building while the School Resource Officer and other school security staff watch all doors to make sure the school is safe.
