Pittsylvania County voters approved a one-percent sales tax increase referendum

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – On Election Day, the referendum to raise the sales tax by one percent in Pittsylvania County was approved by a margin of around 900 votes.

A Vote Yes to PCS campaign has been underway since early this year, despite the fact that last year’s referendum was lost by a margin of just 14 votes.

At the meeting of the school board on Tuesday night, it was also reported that a total of $44,000 had been raised for the campaign from members of the community.

They said that anywhere between four hundred and five hundred signs were hung in front of people’s homes in support of the referendum.

“Over the next few years, the learning environment will greatly improve for our elementary school students. It will be upgraded. They will not have the air conditioners running in a trailer. They don’t have to go outside to go to the gym anymore. All of that facility will be connected,” said Martha Walker, chair of the Pittsylvanians for a Brighter Future.

The increase is expected to bring in $50 million, which will be used to build new schools and fix up old ones in the Pittsylvania County Public School system.
