Area students invited to interactive poetry workshops at Piedmont Arts in Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Students from the surrounding area are welcome to join the interactive poetry workshops at Piedmont Arts’ Martinsville location.

Piedmont Arts has received a donation of $5,000 from the Harvest Youth Board in order to assist them in funding their brand new “Poetry to Lift us Up” program.

The program was started this year in an attempt to raise the overall level of literacy among students in middle school and high school.

Each month, children in Henry County and Martinsville have the opportunity to participate in interactive poetry workshops led by well-known poets such as Roscoe Burnems, who was the winner of the national Slam poetry competition.

Piedmont Arts is working hard to get younger children into the program as soon as possible.

As a college student, making an extra buck now and then was very important. I started as a part-time reporter since I was 19 yo, and I couldn’t believe it might become a long-time career. I'm happy to be part of the Virginian Tribune's team.
