Roanoke Valley children received free books at Carilion Children’s Family Literacy Fair

ROANOKE, Va. – As part of the celebrations for National Family Literacy Month, young people from the Roanoke Valley were given free books.

The Carilion Children’s Family Literacy Book Fair was held at the Tanglewood Center on Wednesday. This event was the very first of its kind.

Patients of all ages, from babies to early teenagers, were able to choose books to take with them after their appointments.

The people who are organizing this event believe that it is essential for families to begin engaging in shared reading activities at a young age.

“Reading opens a whole new world for you, and we hope that the earlier you learn to read, the more proficient you will be,” said Kay Strickland, Carilion Foundation Chief Development Officer.

The coloring book “Captain Carilion” was written by Nancy Ruth Patterson, who was there to sign copies of the book and distribute them to the hospital’s patients.
