City launches major Gainsboro Road improvement project to enhance safety and accessibility

Roanoke, Virginia – A large-scale construction project aimed at transforming Gainsboro Road is set to begin Monday, June 30, bringing with it a wave of enhancements that promise to improve mobility, safety, and access for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike. The project will stretch from Salem Avenue to Orange Avenue and will continue through spring 2026.

Community-Informed Improvements Taking Shape

The upgrades are the result of active collaboration between city planners and members of the Gainsboro community, including neighbors and local businesses. Key features of the redevelopment include high-visibility crosswalks, ADA-compliant sidewalks, curb extensions, and new pedestrian signals. In addition to these upgrades, a dedicated mobility track will be added to better support bicyclists and people using wheelchairs or other mobility devices.

On-street parking will also be expanded along the corridor, aiming to make the area more convenient for both residents and visitors. A particularly noteworthy feature is the recent enhancement at the Orange Avenue intersection, where a state-of-the-art pedestrian and bicycle detection system has been installed. This cutting-edge technology allows people to cross more safely and efficiently, especially those heading to popular local destinations such as the YMCA, the Washington Park Pool, or nearby residential blocks.

What Residents Should Expect During Construction

While the improvements are welcomed, the construction will cause some short-term disruptions. Gainsboro Road will remain open to traffic throughout the project, but travelers should anticipate periodic lane closures and possible delays. The work will be conducted in phases to help minimize these impacts.

The construction is being managed by contractor EC Pace, and city officials anticipate the project will be fully completed by spring 2026. Community members are encouraged to stay informed about project updates and traffic changes through city communication channels.
