Virginia man won $237,037 after joking with his wife about winning the lottery

A man from Virginia made a remark that turned out to be much more than just a joke when it came out that he had won the lottery.

According to a press release from the Virginia Lotto, a man named Charles Smith from Newport News was saying goodbye to his wife before going on a vacation when he joked, “I’ll call you when I win the lottery.”

A few days later, Smith won the jackpot in the “Cash 5 with EZ Match” game offered by the Virginia Lottery, which was worth $227,037.

After he won the lottery, he informed the state lottery officials, “My wife still thinks I’m joking!” According to the Virginia Lottery, the odds of winning the jackpot are just one in 749,398.

Smith determined his lucky numbers to be 4-6-8-12-15 by basing them on the birthdates of his family members.

He said that, other than paying off certain bills, he does not have any further specific plans in mind for the six-figure prize that he received.
