Immigration reform discussions subject of Kaine’s visit to Salem

SALEM, Va. – Thursday was the second day of US Senator Tim Kaine’s (D-VA) trip through southwestern Virginia, and throughout both of his appearances in Salem, the subject of immigration reform came up in discussion.

The first stop of the day for Kaine was a trip to the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a Hindu temple located close to Route 419. He also spoke with members of the South Asian community and representatives from other immigration groups.

Kaine said that the current labor shortage might have an influence on the national debate after years of delay on immigration reform.

“What I see changing right now is the unemployment rate is so low, my Chamber of Commerce, my Farm Bureau, my Associated General Contractors, they’re saying to me, we’ve got to have more robust immigration reform to get workers,” said Kaine.
