Roanoke organizes city-wide collection drive until October 16 for essential supplies to help Hurricane Helene survivors

Roanoke, Virginia – The city of Roanoke is leading a massive donation drive to aid the victims of Hurricane Helene in Southwest Virginia in what appears to be a remarkable display of solidarity and compassion. The storm, which left a trail of destruction across several states, has particularly affected rural communities in the region, prompting an urgent call for support.

City officials and local leaders in Roanoke are organizing local residents to provide basic supplies and emergency items to help people living in adjacent rural areas—including Damascus and Washington County—that are experiencing problems. Resilient as they are, these towns are now dealing with the consequences of the hurricane that destroyed homes and disrupted lives.

Roanoke residents are urged to bring donations to several drop-off sites around the city. The appointed sites comprise the Municipal Building, the Department of Social Services, and any of the Roanoke public library branches. Set to run until Wednesday, October 16, 2024, the campaign seeks to compile a variety of vital supplies to satisfy the urgent requirements of the impacted communities.

Essential items needed

The city has provided a comprehensive list of the items most needed by those in the impacted areas:

  • Water, including bottled and gallon jugs
  • Non-perishable food such as canned goods, peanut butter, dried fruit, and protein bars
  • Baby necessities like formula and food
  • Health and safety kits including first aid supplies
  • Lighting solutions like flashlights and batteries
  • Bedding materials such as blankets and sleeping bags
  • Personal hygiene products, including toiletries and sanitary products
  • Cleaning supplies such as bleach, disinfectants, mops, and sponges
  • Protective gear including gloves, new socks, underwear, and rain gear

The City of Roanoke has teamed with the United Way to guarantee the effective allocation of funds. This cooperation seeks to ensure that every donation quickly and successfully reaches people most in need. Coordinating these activities depends on the United Way’s great expertise in disaster response, which guarantees that resources are used where most needed.

The project aims not only for meeting current needs but also for evaluating and handling changing ongoing needs. City officials have said they would keep a tight eye on the matter and are ready to extend the contribution campaign should needed to help their neighbors continuously.

This event once more underlines the need of communal togetherness in challenging times. These donations will let our Southwest Virginian neighbors know they are not alone. No matter how little a gift one makes, every one counts.

With people from all walks of life banding together to offer a helping hand, the community’s response thus far has been rather overwhelmingly positive. Although Hurricane Helene demonstrated that disasters can destroy areas, the reaction of surrounding areas like Roanoke also emphasizes the great influence of group human compassion and resiliency.
